As much as I love Worpress for blogs and getting indexed, a static web site done correctly with html is almost a must.  Ablog is always changing, vistors have to search for things, where a static web site stays the same unless you change it.
Over time given every thing equal a static web site will have more natural traffic. It's easier to give people step by step instructions of how to do something, so if they come back and just just pickup where they stopped, a blog may have changed 2 or 3 times betwin visits.
There is a place for both. Awordpress blog is alot easier, and yes you can have a static page on wordpress, Static page is the landing page that is usually not changed.

By learning html you can also do some cool things on a blog.
